Welcome, Swifties and fashion enthusiasts, to a whimsical journey down the yellow brick road! If you were also mesmerized with Taylor’s Dorothy-Inspired dress, and were subsequently heartbroken to see it absent online - buckle up! I’m sharing how I’d re-create the dress using a few different sewing patterns, fabrics, and a hyper-fixation just waiting to start.
Grab your ruby slippers and let’s go!
Patterns:
The Spring 2023 Coach dress shown in the video features a classic peter pan collared dress with a high bust line, a-line skirt and puff sleeves. I especially love the ruffle collar and embroidered flower detailing. I think Vogue’s V1822 would be the perfect match for this pattern. With a few minor tweaks, it would make an exact replica.
For my plus-size girlies, McCalls’ M8385 is a near-perfect match. This pattern runs from size 20-38! As with first pattern, you’ll need to make a few minor tweaks (bring the waistline up to the bust and shape the collar for an easy start) but it’s a good place to start!
Fabrics:
Gingham is always a difficult fabric for me, personally. I can never find the right shade OR size check that I want, so I always head to Spoonflower when I want something specific. The Coach dress does appear to be the classic Dorothy blue we all know and love, but if you’d like to go with a similar shade to the music video (a-la-sage green), these two above from Spoonflower would be perfect. Make sure to order it in Chiffon to keep with the runway garment. I believe it’s a Chiffon due to the sheer nature and flowy texture.
